Eyes in the eyes with your baby, you sometimes have the impression that his eyes go astray. An unpleasant impression you do not know what to think. Sophie Georges-Randretsa, orthoptist, helps you to see clearly.

The problem

  • The looks exchanged with your baby are essential to communication. So when you have the impression to detect an anomaly in his, that worries you.
  • An anomaly in untreated vision can disrupt his acquisitions and perhaps his development.

He has strange eye movements

  • You give the bottle to your baby, here he begins to squint on the pacifier. You give him his rattle: he picks it up several times to catch it.

What has to be done

  • If your baby is less than 4 months old, rest assured. The visual system of the infant is immature at birth. Up to 4 months, he may have poorly controlled eye movements.
  • At birth, he already has the reflex to blink in the light but his eyes seem vague and his visual acuity is only 1 / 10th. Then, he will be able to follow an object of the look and the accommodation will be put in place.
  • In the meantime, he practices and his vision develops, which explains some errors of appreciation of distances, or a look that deviates.

His eyes always have the same defect

  • His eyes deviate, or a problem persists after four months.

What has to be done

  • Consult an ophthalmologist, preferably specialized in pediatrics. Once removed from the eye, he will look for an optical anomaly: myopia, astigmatism or farsightedness, and prescribe to your baby, if necessary, corrective glasses.
  • Then he will send you to see an orthoptist. He will refine his diagnosis thanks to the test "Baby vision" looking for a strabismus, an abnormality in eye movements, or a possible difference in vision between the two eyes. If this is the case, a reeducation will be necessary.
  • With a regular follow-up, you will not only make the problem worse, but also give your baby a better view.
